Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

OCD is characterized by the presence of obsessions and/or compulsions, the specific content of these obsessions and compulsions varies among individuals; however, there are particular similarities in regards to the ways they appear. Frequent OCD themes often include those of cleaning, symmetry, forbidden or taboo thoughts, and harm. Due to this, it can be easy for these obsessions or compulsions to become time-consuming and impair an individual’s daily functioning. When these thoughts or behaviors are demonstrated in excess, it can pose a significant risk to the individual.

Obsessions are the intrusive and recurrent thoughts experienced and compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts that must be completed by an individual in response to these thoughts. They become a set of rigidly set rules that an individual will strictly adhere to. In response to these rules, a person’s mental state is severely impacted, which can be particularly difficult for family members because it can strain relationships and impede other important events. It is encouraged that individuals will engage in an intensive treatment that includes both exposure and response prevention. Through our care, support and understanding, we will help you to overcome the many challenges experienced due to OCD.
